Asset Categories

Categories let you group assets by type — for example, “HVAC”, “Elevators”, “Fire Systems”, or whatever makes sense for your business. Once set up, you can use categories to filter the asset list down to just the equipment you’re looking for.

Categories can be nested. You can have a top-level category like “HVAC” and subcategories under it like “Split units”, “VRF systems”, “Ventilation”. There’s no limit on how many levels deep you go.

When you filter the asset list by a category, assets in any of its subcategories are included automatically — you don’t need to select each subcategory separately.

Go to Assets → Categories to see the full category tree.

Click Add category and fill in:

  • Name — what the category is called
  • Description — optional, just for your own reference
  • Parent category — if this category sits inside another one, select the parent here. Leave blank for a top-level category.

The URL slug is generated automatically from the name. You don’t need to set it manually.

Click on any category in the list to open it. Change the name, description, or parent and save.

Changing a category’s parent moves it (and all its subcategories) to the new position in the tree.

Delete a category from its edit page. Before deleting, check whether any assets are assigned to it — those assignments will be removed when the category is deleted. Subcategories are also deleted.

Categories are assigned on the asset record itself, not from the category management page. When creating or editing an asset, you’ll see a categories field where you can pick one or more categories from the tree.

An asset can belong to multiple categories at the same time.
